Introduction to 'The Open Door Approach - Every child deserves a way': A Whole-School Approach to Creating Inclusive Classrooms for All Children
Welcome to The Open Door Approach — Exciting Teacher’s signature framework for building inclusive, emotionally literate classrooms where every child can belong, learn, and thrive.
Classrooms are full of difference. Every child brings unique strengths, needs, and ways of learning. Yet too often, education systems close doors — through inaccessible teaching, rigid routines, or narrow views of success.
The Open Door Approach changes this. It’s built on the belief that if we design for inclusion first, we create classrooms where every child finds a way in. No child should feel shut out of learning, belonging, or expression.
What is the aim? To build an inclusive classroom environment that is designed with every child in mind!
The framework is shaped around four doors every teacher can hold open: The Door of Safety, The Door of Understanding, The Door Expression and The Door of Belonging.
- At class level, teachers can use the doors to plan lessons, manage routines, and build calm, emotionally literate learning spaces.
- At school level, leaders can embed the doors into behaviour policies, CPD, and curriculum design — ensuring every adult speaks the same language of safety, understanding, expression, and belonging (this is the aim)!
- Together, this creates a whole-school approach where children know what to expect, staff feel confident, and families see consistency.
This framework supports Ofsted’s renewed focus in 2026 on inclusion for every child, helping schools show how they meet the needs of all learners through proactive, practical strategies.

The Door of Safety is available from February 2026!
The Door of Understanding will launch in June 2026.
The Door of Expression will launch in July 2026.
The Door of Belonging will launch in August 2026.
